Growing up with autism is a rollercoaster of emotions. It is different for everyone, but for me, it was a constant battle between trying to fit in and feeling like an outsider. I was diagnosed with autism at a young age, and it was a relief to finally put a name to the struggles I faced every day. But it wasn't an easy journey, and there were times when I felt lost and alone.
As a child, I struggled with social interactions. I didn't understand social cues or how to read people's emotions. I would often say things that were considered inappropriate or off-putting, without realizing it. This would lead to ridicule and rejection, which in turn made me feel like there was something wrong with me. It was a vicious cycle that seemed impossible to break.
As I got older, things got harder. The expectations placed on me increased, and with it came a sense of anxiety and pressure. I felt like I had to work twice as hard as everyone else just to keep up. The constant need to fit in and be 'normal' was exhausting, and I often felt overwhelmed and isolated.
But there were bright moments too. I discovered my passion for music, and it became a source of comfort and expression for me. It allowed me to connect with others in a way that I couldn't through conventional means. I also found a few close friends who accepted me for who I was, quirks and all.
There were setbacks too, of course. There were times when I felt like giving up, when the weight of my struggles felt like too much to bear. But I persevered, and with each challenge I faced, I became stronger and more resilient.
Today, I am an adult with autism, and while the struggles never truly go away, I've learned to manage them better. I've found ways to cope with my anxiety, and I've developed a network of support that includes family, friends, and professionals. I'm also proud to say that I've achieved many of the goals I set for myself, including graduating from college and pursuing a career in music.
Growing up with autism has been a rollercoaster of emotions, but it has also been a journey of self-discovery and growth. I've learned that it's okay to be different, that there is beauty in our quirks and imperfections. And most importantly, I've learned that with perseverance and support, anything is possible.
