The beginning of the year 2020 brought so many promises and hopes for me. As a young adult, I had many goals and dreams to achieve. However, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic changed everything. I lost many important things in my life, and it was a challenging experience that I will never forget.
One of the biggest losses I encountered this year was losing my grandfather. Grandpa was my role model, my mentor, and my confidant. He was always there for me, supporting me in every aspect of my life. We used to talk about everything, from politics to hobbies to life goals. Losing him to COVID-19 was devastating, and it left a huge vacuum in my life.
Moreover, the pandemic forced me to drop out of the university I was attending as the school shifted to an online platform. I was so disappointed with the change, as I cherished the face-to-face interactions with my professors and peers. However, the adjustment was hard, and it took me some time to adapt to the new virtual classroom setting.
Additionally, I had to cancel my travel plans, which were supposed to be a reward for my hard work. Travelling has always been my stress-reliever, my chance to discover new places, and meet new cultures. The cancelation left me frustrated as it was one of the few things I had looked forward to during the pandemic.
Reflecting on these personal losses, I have learned a lot about myself, my family, and the community around me. I have learned that life is full of uncertainties and that we have to cherish every moment we have. I have come to appreciate the power of human connections, and how the love and support of our family and friends can be a beacon of hope during tough times.
Furthermore, I have seen how the pandemic has challenged our systems; education, healthcare, and the economy. I realize that there needs to be more investment in these systems to withstand the pressure of external shocks like pandemics. This pandemic exposed the cracks that exist, and it's essential that we work to mend them.
In conclusion, the year 2020 has been one of the most challenging years for me. Despite the setbacks, I have grown and developed valuable skills like patience, resilience, and adaptability. I have learned to appreciate life and the people around, and I am hopeful that better days are ahead. As we usher in 2021, I am optimistic that with mutual efforts, we can conquer the pandemic and come out stronger.
