PRIDE

In the realm of emotions, pride is both a gift and a curse. At its best, it fuels confidence, self-assurance, and the drive to achieve great things. At its worst, it leads us down a dark path of arrogance, self-absorption, and isolation.

As a poet, I am intimately familiar with the many faces of pride. It can be a source of inspiration, pushing me to reach for the stars and make my voice heard. It can also be a hindrance, making me overly critical of my own work and shutting down the flow of creativity.

One of my favorite poems about pride is by the Chinese poet Du Fu, who wrote:

"Know well what leads you forward and what holds you back, and choose the path that leads to wisdom."

These words speak to the importance of finding balance in our pride. We must acknowledge our strengths while also being aware of our weaknesses, and not allow our ego to blind us to our flaws.

In my own life, I have struggled with pride in many forms. As a young writer, I was too timid and self-conscious to share my work with others. It was only when I allowed myself to take pride in my abilities and put myself out there that I began to receive recognition and validation.

But as I grew more successful, I also began to feel the weight of my own expectations. I became obsessed with perfection and afraid of failure, and my pride turned into a burden that held me back.

It was only when I learned to let go of my ego and embrace my imperfections that I truly found my voice as a writer. I learned to take pride in my progress rather than my achievements, and to celebrate the journey rather than the destination.

In the end, pride is a complex emotion that must be carefully managed if we are to find true success and fulfillment. We must strive to find a balance between confidence and humility, between ambition and gratitude, and between self-love and empathy.

As the Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy once wrote, "The two most powerful warriors are patience and time." By cultivating these two qualities and folding them into our pride, we can achieve great things while also remaining true to ourselves and our values.
